My Raw Year

So I made it through last night somehow. The green smoothie helped a bit but mostly I want to determine once and for all whether or not this diet is workable for me. I don’t really know how long that will take but it’s longer than this.

I’m still kinda sick, lots of mucus and such. Hoping my optimism picks up when I feel better.

I just realized I had skipped my green smoothie for the day. I hastily made and consumed one in the hopes it will stave off these overwhelming cravings. We’ll see.

I really want some. Meat or eggs sounds incredible. I had another Mexican Pizza hoping it would stop the craving but no go. Today is day 80 raw this year for me though and I want to make it the day. At the moment a raw diet plus meat and eggs sounds ideal.

Woke up today feeling pretty grim. Lots of mucus and coughing. Not sure if this is detox or standard illness as two of the kids have also been under the weather. Trying not to have much fat. So far I’ve had two smoothies and some pineapple. One of them was pineapple, blueberries and banana. It came out very pretty as you can see,

It is notable, I think, that this happened on about the same day I’ve always gone off raw in the past. I’ve had several spurts of 10, 11, or 12 days since ’99 but never gone longer, so this is in some ways rarely charted territory. Even with my recent juice f(e)ast of 25 days I definatily hit a wall days 12 through 14. It’s as if there’s a new level of detox or release as this stage and I’m intrigued to know what lies beyond it.

Mexican Pizza October 11, 2008

I’ve been eating flax crackers with avocado & salsa and it’s delicious but they’re worse than even tacos as far as falling apart as you chew. One or two hasty bites per chip is all I get before the structure collapses. This makes for a stressful snack.

So the last time I made the crackers thicker, pre-formed them into pizza crusts and substituted chili powder and cumin for basil and thyme. Yesterday I topped one with a smashed avocado, salsa and fresh corn and garnished it with green onions. The result? A hearty Mexican pizza that stayed together ’till the end. Wonderful.

Late night October 9, 2008

It’s been a bit since my last post. One thing I’m struck with is how easy it’s been. I’ve been lusting after this way of life for so long… Maybe I’m just ready. Feels like I am anyway. As to what I’ve been eating, I usually have a couple smoothies a day, one green and one not. When I want something else I have flax crackers with avocado, corn and salsa on top. I snack on fresh and dried fruit as I feed it to the kids, and that’s about it. Sometimes I drink unsweetened tea, not herbal or anything, but only every few days. Yeah yeah, caffeine’s bad, blah blah blah… I’m not trying to be the world’s biggest health nut. Tea just doesn’t bother me. Maybe one day I’ll look back at this post in horror. I hope not.

Been running at a bit of a sleep deficit recently. Four kids is a bit of a job sometimes, especially when two of them get up an seven in the morning and Frasier doesn’t come on ’till midnight. The diet has given me more energy and such to handle things though. It also gives me more patience, and a more detached perspective, so I’m a better parent than I otherwise would be. If you’ve never tried the rawness you might think I’m confused and attributing benefits to the diet that are at best fanciful… If you’ve tried it you know I’m telling the truth.

Well it’s late and the pillow beckons. Night all.

Well it’s been a week October 7, 2008

And I’ve lost ten pounds. Dehydrated some apples last night, those came out well; I’ve got tomatoes and crackers in right now. Found a good smoothie recipe yesterday when I ran out of bananas.

Minimalie

  • Pineapple
  • Spinach
  • Blueberries (frozen)
  • Water (enough to get it going)

I’ve been afraid of making smoothies without banana but it was actually nice not to have them.

Chocolate Mexican October 5, 2008

I made the chocolate tortillas from Naked Chocolate, and they came out incredible. As far as I’m concerned that book is worth having just for the recipes. I ate a couple with guacamole, salsa and some fatoosh I made last night. Mmmm…

Moody and under the emotional weather for the first part of today. This is the first day that was at all challenging. Going shopping was an exercise in restraint. I got some raw salsa in the cooler in the produce department that turned out to be really good, and cheap too. I had a couple smoothies, other than that I ate pretty lightly today. I dried some shredded coconut and I’m making some flax crackers. Feeling much better now.
